People on the streets

Citizens of India have risen in response to the brutal gang rape of a 23 year old student in a moving bus in Delhi. People are asking for Justice for the girl and to make India safe for women. However! I want to ask this - Why did people go on the streets? Is it the brutality of this particular case?

People rose because we, the people of India, know that "nothing" will be done unless we rise and force the government to take action. Do you think we would be on the streets if we knew that our legal and political machinery works, that it will take swift and appropriate action?

Let us all keep in mind this fact. This has become a national issue because we are fed up with the "system". Yes, we want justice to be done. Yes! We want a strong punishment to be given to the rapists. YES! We want safety for women. BUT its more than that. We want a system that we can trust to work. We want a society, a judiciary, a police, a political class, a media that we can be proud of. We have waited long enough for the so called "dented and painted" politicians to give us what is our birthright. If our rights are not respected, we will fight for them.
